Check out my first firing from the high-fire, salt kiln at the Arvada Center for Arts and Humanities in Arvada, Colorado. Great colors and beautiful atmospheric reactions on the pottery!

Goodbye office space? The shrinking American cubicle - CNN.com →

Hello, bullpen! Where have you been? I have missed you.

We all learned how to play with each other in kindergarten, right? Well, there was that time someone broke all my crayons… and I think I threw a block at some kid named Kenny. But playing with others, helps us play well with others and I do not think that putting us in our own separate areas promotes relationships or creativity.

Much of my life has been in a bullpen settings and I am a huge fan. High school art classes, my industrial design studio, sculpture studio, and my first few jobs out of college ~ all of these places created strong working relationships and amazing ideas.

And, no, I had no privacy. If I needed “quiet” I would shut my mental door (sometimes with the headphones to help).

So, knock down those silly fabric walls, remove your Les Nesman tape door, and get to know how to work with your co-workers. You might be surprised at how much more you get done and how much more fun you can have!

What do you think about virtual museum tours? →

Google just launched The Art Project at http://www.googleartproject.com/  and has gotten quite a bit of reviews from various sources.

But what are your (artists, designers, students, teachers, etc.) thoughts about making the museum experience virtual?

I find that the ability to zoom into content detail is amazing, but some of the “walk-through” experiences are never going to be as awe-inspiring as standing in front of Cézanne’s Still Life with Apples.

Still I find this to be a fabulous learning tool as well as a quick way to travel around the world to see the works from amazing masters. May it give you the inspiration to expand your own artistic endeavors or plan your next museum adventure!

I am doing some final packing and came across this early piece of art work. I made some seriously creepy, yet delicate, stuff in college. I LOVE this piece.

Proposed Q2 iPad May Confront Web/Device Accessibility Ageism

Although, my 81 year old father-in-law sent me a text from my husband’s Droid over the Thanksgiving holiday, I find that many of our current communication devices offer limited accessibility to older folks. Whether it be cost or complexity, I think the tablet revolution (specifically, the iPad) will open up Web and Device Accessibility for aging individuals as well as disabled people.

As many of you may know, I heart the Apple system for many reasons: its simplicity, its power and its sleekness, among them. I am excited to hear that the iPad (hee, hee, hee. The name still makes me chuckle.) is really getting into the game by finally adding two (2) cameras. (The decreased size doesn’t really pique my interest, but the proposed smaller size will make many a life ‘easier’ as this portable multi-purpose device can just be tossed into some over-sized designer shoulder bag, just to be brought out to impress friends and strangers at a cafe.)

Wikipedia states that, “Accessibility is a general term used to describe the degree to which a product, device, service, or environment is available to as many people as possible.”

So why is it that many of our devices are not “accessible” to older people and those with a range of disabilities?

I look at the additional camera, easy touch features and straightforward operating system of the proposed iPad for Q2 and think to myself that this device will give more access to folks who have limited access to technology. More specifically, my in-laws are curious about technology, but there is so much to know, purchase and maintain.

In addition, this will allow an easier interface for many a person with or without disabilities. The large touch interface makes for a friendlier tactile experience, rather than the confusing and often small interface with a video enabled cell phone or the multiple component home computer. Press a few icons with your finger and you are just about there.

Many people do not have a home computer and/or have limited access to one. The shear cost of a home computer and internet connection can be limiting to many of us in this economy. But to those on fix incomes, the cost of internet and the many components for computer setup can be overwhelming. And if there is a problem with the software or hardware, it could cost a lot more (time, money and hassle) to fix. Plus, the basic 3G data plan from AT&T would only cost $14.99/month. That is a fraction of the cost of basic cell phone plan and no need for a computer and Wi-Fi station set up in the home.

The iPad’s proposed new features can make communication and information more economical and accessible. Specifically, our families could easily “see” me and my husband from 2000 miles away and they can read the daily news headlines (in their chosen type size), all on a Sunday morning over a cup of coffee. Now, that is what I call “accessibility.”

Do you have picture or stories about ageism and technology? Please share them here!

Slow Cooker Pulled Pork

This pulled pork recipe is so easy and yummy, you will make it all of the time.

Step 1: Use a dry rub (of your choice, I use one with hot stuff, cumin and brown sugar) on a piece of pork shoulder (5-8lbs)

Step 2: Wrap meat in plastic wrap and place in refrigerator for 3-12 hours

Step 3: Place seasoned pork shoulder in slow cooker with 1/4c of water

Step 4: Set timer for 8-10hrs on low

Step 5: ‘Pull’ pork with a fork or your fingers

Step 6: Add BBQ sauce of your choice (I usually use 1-2 cups)

Step 7: Enjoy!!
